OpenAlex: Building a Modern Library of Alexandria for Research
OpenAlex is our attempt at building a modern Library of Alexandria for research—a single, open map of the scholarly world where 250M+ papers, 100M+ authors, 100k+ institutions and more all live in one connected catalog. We don’t create the scrolls ourselves; we gather them from the amazing open infrastructures that already exist—Crossref, DataCite, ORCID, ROR, DOAJ, Pubmed, ArXiv, and thousands of other repositories. Then we connect them into an accurate, expansive, disambiguated catalog that everyone can use to search, analyze, and build upon. We're trying to provide the integrating structures to turn scattered fragments into a real working library. And while the shelves are free and open to everyone forever, we’ve built a sustainable model by offering daily updates to organizations that need them, while keeping the core dataset and quarterly data dumps completely open. The vision is simple but big: to provide universal, comprehensive access to scholarly information for everyone.
